What can we learn about kinship from the question of margins? Conversely, how do kinship studies help to inform the relation of margins to the norm? How are understood this notion of margin, or those of edges, boundaries, and limits, across time and geographical spaces? Through five original articles and a double interview, this issue sheds light on the diversity of meanings of the notion of margins by describing the practices, representations and standards associated with them. It is an invitation to re-examine classic anthropological themes such as alliance, the relationship between the living and the dead, gender and descent.

This special issue is coordinated by EnCoRe, a group of French researchers in sociology and social anthropology working on themes relating to the body, kinship, reproduction and gender. Two researchers from the Norbert Elias Centre take part in it: Anaïs Martin (EHESS), PhD-student in social anthropology, and Manon Vialle (CNRS), post-doctoral fellow in sociology.
